Structural damage caused by timber pests is often not apparent until it is extensive.

Termites are voracious eaters that represent a constant threat in Sydney as well as in many other areas of New South Wales.

As a result of termites destructiveness, a ceiling or floor joist that appears strong on the surface can have no strength at all. When termites consume the edible cellulose in boards and beams, they leave only a shell that requires replacement.

Costing thousands to repair and reducing the resale value, termite damage is a stigma that remains with a house for the long term. Statistics from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) confirm that one in every five homes in Australia experiences a termite attack.

A qualified timber pest professional can inspect a property to ascertain the presence of termites and the extent of damage.

Using Traditional Tools and Technology for Detection

Traditional tools for detecting termites include a probe/tapping device that reveals deterioration. Tapping wood structures such as door jams and frames, window reveals, architraves and skirtings can confirm damage caused by termites. Moisture meters allow detection of termite activity in damp environments that often provide an ideal refuge for timber pests.

Thermal cameras represent a technological advancement in pest control that can identify differences in wall surface temperatures.

The camera displays white images for areas that are ‘hot’, indicating the presence of termite nests or infestation. ‘Cold’ areas appear as black images, often the result of a roof or shower leak. Termites prefer dampness and locating dark conditions in an inspection can prevent a potential infestation.

The thermal scan that we perform exceeds the Australian Standard 4349.3-1998 and AS 3660 guidelines, and we include it for our clients as an extra benefit of our service.

The superior ability of the camera to detect termites and borers as well as wood decaying fungi provides clients with peace of mind that is unavailable with less sophisticated methods. BPI’s Chris Mizzi is a fully qualified inspector who can interpret the camera’s images to accurately locate infestations that make eradication most effective.
